Fry is an elementary wrestler for Arizona club Grindhouse. Wyatt trains with his father, Bret, and Coach LC Cain at the Grindhouse Club in Phoenix. A five-time state youth champion, Wyatt travels all over the country competing in freestyle and Greco as well as Folkstyle, earning the Triple Crown for both Arizona and the Western Region.

Fry is not the only wrestler in the family as his father (Bret) won the USA Veterans Championship, then went on to place 5th in the World Championships held in Bosnia. Fry decided to attend Wyoming Seminary as it has a lot of wrestling tradition. He feels that the training he will get there will help him achieve his dreams of earning a wrestling scholarship.

I had the pleasure of speaking to Fry to discuss his future endeavors and what makes him a great champion.

Di Maria – How hard is it to win state?

Fry – In Arizona, it depends on the year. We have some tough National level kids that I wrestle against. Jr High State was tougher because I’m young for it right now.

Di Maria – What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever learned from a coach?

Fry – My Coach, LC, is pretty funny. He shows new moves with funny language sometimes. He likes to tease us when we mess up.

Di Maria – What’s the hardest part about wrestling for you?

Fry – Making weight for sure. Sometimes it’s Wrestling my friends in tournaments.

Di Maria – What’s the biggest prize in wrestling?

Fry – Being young, it’s winning Tulsa or Super 32. When I’m older I hope I will be winning a scholarship to college.

Di Maria – Do you watch professional wrestling on TV? Any favorites?

Fry – Not really.

Di Maria – How many different moves do you have?

Fry – Hmm a lot. But I use 8-10 regularly.

Di Maria – Are you on a strict diet?

Fry – During the season I am. Off-season I try to mix healthy and treats.

Di Maria – Do your parents eat pizza, burgers, fries, stuff like that in front of you?

Fry – Sometimes they wait until I go to bed and sneak stuff. But sometimes I catch them.

Di Maria – Do you like other sports?

Fry – I like football

Di Maria – What sacrifices do you make for wrestling?

Fry – Don’t get much free time to play video games with my friends online. I spend most of my time going to school, doing homework and practice. I eat my clean lunch while my friends eat junk at school.

Di Maria – How about your parents’ sacrifices?

Fry – My Mom and Dad use most of their time off of work traveling for wrestling. They get up early before work to help me with strength training.

Di Maria – Of all the trips you’ve taken in wrestling, where’s your favorite place to be?

Fry – I enjoy traveling to California.

Di Maria – How are you dealing with this Coronavirus?

Fry – I stay home all the time. I’ve been doing homeschool for 3 weeks now and that’s been hard. I go to an advanced curriculum school, so I still have a lot of work. I get to play Fortnite a little more because I can’t go to practice at night.

Di Maria – Has it affected your performance as a wrestler?

Fry – I can practice with my Dad in our wrestling barn. But it’s not the same as drilling with someone my own size. I’ve never had this much time away since I started wrestling at 5.

Di Maria – What will be the first thing you do once this quarantine thing is over?

Fry – Move to Pennsylvania. I will start school at Wyoming Seminary lower school in the fall. I hope I’ll get some time to practice with my club here, Grindhouse, and all my teammates before I move.

Di Maria – What does it mean to you to be part of the O3T program?

I love being part of this program. They bring so many opportunities to the tablet. They encourage their athletes to not just be good on the mats but in the classroom as well.
