Sometimes being the son of a legendary wrestler can take a toll on some people’s performance on the mats. That’s not the case for Grace Davis junior Carson Prim. You see, Carson’s dad is no other than Lim Prim, a two-time Division II National Champion for Omaha-Nebraska.

In his three seasons as a varsity starter at Grace Davis High, Prim has advanced on two occasions to the California state tournament and garnered All-American status in the Greco-Roman portion of the tournament at Fargo.

Despite not having the best performances at the CIF state tournament, Prim is hoping that his senior year will be the year he stamps his name on the Grace Davis record books by becoming a state champion. I spoke to Carson and we spoke about his future endeavors and what makes him a great wrestler in California.

Di Maria – How hard is it to win state?

Prim – That would depend on the state you live in. California is, in my opinion, the toughest state to win. It has the densest population as far as number of wrestlers with skills. No other state has brackets like CIF State. Fact – I beat a Montana State champ at an RMN tournament when I was a Freshman for the belt!

Di Maria – What’s the best advice you’ve ever learned from a coach?

Prim – To believe in me. To never give up. You wrestle to win 100 percent of the time, and that anyone can be beaten on any given day.

Di Maria – What’s the hardest part about wrestling for you?

Prim – Being mentally tough when it comes to weight management is hard. Not living up to my own expectations or being injured.

Di Maria – Have you given any thought to where you’ll wrestle in college?

Prim – I’d like to attend a D1 school.

Di Maria – What’s the biggest prize in wrestling?

Prim – The biggest prize is within yourself. It’s a mental thing rather than a prize you could physically hold. A CIF State title or becoming a Fargo All American, A college NCAA Champion, being part of the UWW World Team, and the US Olympic team. Those would be my top achievement goals.

Di Maria – How many different moves do you know?

Prim – A lot… but I use probably less than 10.

Di Maria – What is the most difficult thing about wrestling?

Prim – Keeping a strong mindset.

Di Maria – What are your biggest motivators?

Prim – Being on top. Name recognition. Making my parents proud.

Di Maria – What is your favorite type of wrestling and why?

Prim – Greco! Greco is the style that everyone else doesn’t want to do. They think it’s tough or scary.

Di Maria – What about the biggest drawback of the sport?

Prim – Weight cutting.

Di Maria – Is it intimidating that your father is who he is?

Prim – Sometimes. I feel like I have a lot of eyes on me. That means I also have more potential support.

Di Maria – What are your biggest accomplishments?

Prim – I’ve placed at Reno Worlds several times since I was little. I’ve taken 4th three times, 5th, and 8th.  Placed at several RMN tournaments. I’ve made it to CIF 2-2 years. Western Regionals Champ, and Fargo All American.

Di Maria – Who are your biggest fans?

Prim – My parents, sisters, and my nephew. Oh, and Damon.

Di Maria – What sacrifices do you make for wrestling?

Prim – Wrestling is a lot of hard work. Practices, Weight room, keeping my GPA up, commitment, staying mentally tough. Not being able to hang out with friends that aren’t wrestlers.

There are a lot, but I wouldn’t change it at all.

Di Maria – How about your parents’ sacrifices?

Prim – My parents sacrifice a lot. I’m lucky. Both of my parents are always in my corner or the stands. Time, money, commitment, and support.

Di Maria – Of all the trips you’ve taken in wrestling, where’s your favorite place to be?

Prim – I had a lot of fun last year for Junior Duals, fun in Vegas, but Fargo is the best. The atmosphere. The hype. The competition. Seeing a lot of my friends from other States.

Di Maria – How are you dealing with this Coronavirus?

Prim – I’m following the rules and staying in quarantine. I lift and exercise at home with my Dad. We have a mat, so I still get to roll around.

Di Maria – Has it affected your performance as a wrestler?

Prim – It’s hard thinking there most likely won’t be a Freestyle/Greco-Roman season this year. I was looking forward to Junior Duals and Fargo again.

Di Maria – What will be the first thing you do once this quarantine thing is over?

Prim – I’d like to visit LA again. I really liked the vibe there.

Di Maria – What does it mean to you to be an O3T member?

It is an honor for me to present such a great brand. Those involved at Tri-Titans have been a blessing in disguise for me. They have provided great opportunities for all members to grow in the sport of wrestling. Mind, Body, and Spirit over anything.
